Or No?
I never realized some of the things I say until I start hearing them from Drew. Case in point - or no? Mom, are we ready to go to school, or no? Do you want a piece of my candy, or no? Is it time to go to bed, or no? Notice the similarities...yep, just when he doesn't really want to do something. He will do it, but it's not his preference. And then I realized, I gave him the - or no? routine. Drew, do you want some milk or no? Do you want to play this game, or no? I don't know when it happened but I lost the t in not! I guess it was when I was trying to simplify words and ideas, or it could have been Mike - did I pick it up from him, or no? :>

Drew's First Official Snow Day
It's so nice to live so close to daycare. A lot of times, we see Drew's teacher, Miss Erin, drive by and know when she gets to school. That's what happened on Monday morning. As the lists of closings were endless on the morning news, I thought maybe LPU would be closed too. But I saw Miss Erin, so we headed out. Drew was so excited to go back to school after being gone for a week. She quickly welcomed us but said - don't get comfortable! We are closed and I'm calling all the parents. It took me a few minutes of standing there hemming and hawing trying to figure out what I was going to do and I told Drew we'd go home. He said - But, but - what about playing with my friends? I go to school today mom! I told him we'd try again tomorrow and we headed back home. Miss Erin was nice enough to come over and babysit so we could go to work for awhile since we'd been off too. But after I got to work and sat down, I just had to laugh when I started thinking about it...what kid is bummed for a snow day? MINE! I realize it was because we had all been together for 9 days and he was ready to get back to his friends, but really, bummed because it was a snow day? Yep!
He did have a great time with Miss Erin. They took a walk down to the park and made 'cchini (zucchini to you and me) with cheese. Apparently 'cchini is great if it's made by Miss Erin!
After we got home from work, I decided to pull out the sprinkles and frosting for Drew's Christmas cookies. We had cut and cooked them a few days before but didn't have much time to finish them. He LOVES frosting things! I was making dinner and not supervising as much as I should have, and before you know it all three containers of sprinkles are on two cookies and he's painting his hands (front and back) with what is now purple frosting! It was a good lesson for Drew - green and red make purple! :>

From 80 to 20 in two days
Well we made it back safely from Florida on Friday night, just in time to see the 11 o' clock news and find out there was a big storm heading for us. Sunday morning we realized that the news was right and a foot of snow was on the ground. 80s to 20s in two days. Drew had a great time helping us shovel out the cars and playing in the snow - which was up to his waist and a bit difficult to manuver!
Cute story of the trip - We were told to be at the airport 3 hours ahead of time and since we had never been to West Palm Beach Airport on a Friday night, we did just that. So we had plenty of time to sit down and have dinner and then try to burn some energy - Drew's that is. We found a big area to run around for about 30 minutes and tuckered him out. As we were in line to board Drew had some rolled up paper and starts talking in to it...Hello, Ladies & Gentlemen, we are going back to Michigan and we're going to have a good flight! He goes on a few more minutes and has everyone around us laughing to no end. He was a very good boy on both flights and on vacation. Must have been 8+ people came up to us after the flight to compliment Drew's behavior (and cuteness).

Kudos - Mom & Dad!
Now that I'm blogging, I'm trying to remember the things I didn't want to forget and it's flooding back.
Last Sunday I made french toast from the Zingermann's awesome cinammon raisin bread. Drew doesn't esp. like french toast but I thought with this bread how can he not. Well - he doesn't, but he does love his sausage. It's the premade stuff you just have to heat up. So we are sitting down, eating breakfast and out of nowhere he says - thanks for makin' dinner mom! this is good - Now this isn't the first time he's thanked me for my awesome cooking. A few weeks prior, we had leftovers from Olive Garden. I came home and heated everything up for dinner. We are all sitting at the table, Mike is on a work call, and Drew looks at me - thanks for makin' dinner mom. You're welcome, buddy. thanks for acknowledging. Then a few minutes later, as he's eating his leftover breadstick - and mom, thanks for making bread too - it's really good! You're welcome sweetie, I say. (In my head - what the F! I can slave over a great meal and nothing, but I heat up leftovers and it's the best meal ever!)
After the french toast, Drew finds the muffin tins and cupcake liners and wants to make cupcakes. It's snowing and cold outside, so why not, let's make cupcakes. We finish and he gets to lick the raw egg cake batter from both beaters and the bowl, then he wants to wash it out. Sure, let's move your stool to the sink so you can do that, thanks for your help buddy. A few minutes later he looks at me - Mom, thanks for YOUR help! as he continues to wash up the mess. ahhh, if things could always be this good! Those are the moments that reassure me of my parenting!

hey - she's got a bigger butt!
November 2007
It was one of those moments I had thought about frequently and hoped I would be the first parent in history not to be embarrassed by my child. We were at Meijer and Mike had just taken Drew upstairs to use the potty. Of course, we were all the way in the back of the store when he decides to tell us he needs to go - but I'm just happy he's telling us. So they are walking down the stairs and Drew has to walk them instead of being carried. Mike is trying to get his coat on when a woman walks by. I don't think much about it until Drew blurts out - She's got a BIGGER butt!! Mike & I shoot looks at each other and he immediately turns around and throws his hand over Drew's mouth. Not obvious or anything! I (luckily) have the cart in my possession and feel this is a good time to walk it back over to where it belongs which happens to be 25 feet from my boys! Mike tries not to giggle at his innocent observation, which of course fuels Drew. Dad - she's got a BIGGER BUTT! Again the hand comes flying out and by this time the woman walks back the way she came and is out of ear shot! few! And for all of you who aren't laughing, and are about to scold me, I did have a conversation in the privacy of the car, to tell Drew that it's not ok to talk about other people, unless we think they are beautiful (or handsome he adds). And we especially don't talk about their butts!

Mom - I have something portant to tell you!
One reason I started this - I remember a friend's son who used to say mobie for movie and belbow for elbow. I said something to her years later, and she had forgotten he said it. I thought, I don't want to forget those precious moments of firsts.
So the other night, Drew is laying on the couch and we're trying to get him to sleep. (yes, bad parents, he falls asleep on the couch then we move him.) He sits up, looks at me and says - MOM - I have something portant (important) to tell you!!!! What?, i said. ummmmm - as he looks around the room for something 'portant - I fell at school when I was climbing up the ladder to go down the slide! Oh really? Yes! But you are ok now, right? yep! ok, let's go night-night now, Drew! few minutes later - MOM! yes, drew? I have something else portant to tell you! yes? I ran in to the dresser and it really hurt. I cried! yes, drew i was there. you're ok now, right (with a chuckle)? yep! ok, time to go to sleep. you can see it coming - right?...few seconds later...mom, (doesn't even wait for a response) I have something ELSE portant to tell you...with the cutist smerk you've ever seen...yes, Drew? ummm, I turned of the Christmas tree lights! Mind you the whole time this is happening, dad is on the couch right next to us and is trying not to laugh or yell about bedtime. he finally pipes in - OK DREW it's time to go to sleep - but, Dad - I have somethin...Enough, Drew go to bed. We both had a few quiet laughs about it. Then, you'll never guess... Yes - the same thing happened the next night! Imagine - it works - I can talk about portant stuff and I get some laughs and I get to stay up! And did mom learn her lesson - no I still chuckle - it really is funny!

time to meet the 21st century
My friend Melissa started a blog for her daughter several months ago. I told her I love going to the site to read up on what's going on in her life and started thinking I should do it too. I started a journal after Drew was born so I would remember every detail of his birth and all the details of his "firsts". I think I may have updated it twice. After I went back to work, I never made the time, or had the time, to get back to it. Then I thought, why not document what Drew does on the web so it's simple and so friends and family can check in on his development too. It's a little scary how people can track everything about you on the web, so I don't know how in detail I'll get - but at least the highlights are important.
